Who We Are
Vision therapy is an individualized, supervised, treatment program of a sequence of exercises that utilizes lenses, prisms, filters and advanced technologies to change how the brain uses the eyes to improve visual function and efficiency. Exercises are prescribed to improve visual function, efficiency and comfort.
An examination at Coast Vision Therapy looks at the function and efficiency of the visual system and how it affects the overall function of the person. We assess relative strengths and weaknesses to learn how our patients use their eyes to gather, process and integrate their vision.
There are 17 skills to efficient, clear vision. These skills include: binocularity (eye teaming), accommodation (eye focusing) and visual perception (eye tracking, visual memory, speed and processing).
Dr. Purvis’s first vision therapy patient was in her 4th year of optometry school. He was a 6 year old who did not like to read. It was found during his examination that he saw double when looking up close. After completing several weeks of in office vision therapy his visual skills improved. Discovering the benefit of being able to remove a visual barrier of reading and learning had Dr. Purvis hooked on vision therapy. In addition to vision and learning cases, she has worked with stroke and concussion patients who had their visual system severely altered. Being able to help a patient regain visual function is the utmost reward.
